Indian Headband
This print by Homer Nelson, titled “Wabano” appeared on a 1925 calendar as part of publisher Brown & Bigelow’s “Indian Heroine Series.” The source photo by Beatrice Tonnesen was found at the Winneconne (WI) Historical Society. Detail of the illustrated headband is faithful to the original photograph. The model is believed to have been Mary Simmonds O’Grady (1896-1976).
The book "Discovering America's Calendar Artists: Vintage Illustration, 1900-1960" by Rick and Charlotte Martin, Copyright 1997 Collectors Press features several images of prints of Indian maidens by Homer Nelson including this one. This one appears to feature the same model (Mary Simmonds O'Grady), wearing the same dress and headband as in the Tonnesen photo and resultant print titled "Wabano." So my guess is that, like "Wabano", "The North Wind" originated in Tonnesen's studio. Unfortunately, this print is not part of my collection, so we have only this black and white image from the Martins' book to view.
